keepin' on goin'.
Well, Sunday, I managed the biggest ride so far this year, out to Kanata via Bells Corners, curcuit of Ktown, and then back. Stopped mid-way to have lunch with sa_sagesse and then hauled on home. Total on that run, 76.99km, in three hours nine minutes. Today, I follwed that up with 33.87km in an hour and twenty-two minutes. at one hour, I was averaging 27km/h, which is great, in my mind. Especially as I'm getting slowed by the traffic AND weather (wind on two legs of the circuit). How's the last week look? Like this:

So, this is where I stand. the last couple of weeks have sucked. I've been lethargic, and off pace, and the weather has been equally shitty, with daily rain and cold temperatures. On the 23rd of May, we had freakin' FLURRIES. What the hell? It's been lousy for doing miles, then. That will change however, as the weather looks much better for the coming weekend. I think I'm going to attempt Ottawa-->Kanata-->Ottawa, by way of Bells Corners. The route will be something like: Bronson, south to Riverside Dr. Riverside Dr southwest to Huntclub Huntclub west to Richmond Road Richmond Road North to Timm Road bike path Timm Road bike path west to Eagleson Rd Eagleson Rd South to Hazledean rd Hazeldean west to CAstleFrank Stop at Tim Hortons, have some lunch, read in the sun REturn trip, reverse directions. Once i punch all this into my favored Google Pedometer, I'll know fairly approximately what the mileage will be. I'm guessing upwards of 70km, but it'll be a lot nicer than the last time I did that volume of riding. In fact, if I manage that, it'll put me around 150km in four days. That's not a huge amount, by any means, but it's a damn sight better than I've been doing recently, so, I'll take it. With luck, the weather will remain at least somewhat clear, and I can get some 20-30km rides in in the afternoons next week. Tonight's trip, after work, will be was: Data centre road north to Riverside. Riverside Dr bike path west to huntclub. Huntclub west to Prince of Wales Prince of Wales south to MacFarlane MacFarlane west to Merivale Rd. Merivale south to Amberwood rd Amberwood east to Prince of wales Prince of wales North to Carling Ave Carling East to Holland Dr Holland North to Sommerset Rd SOmmerset East to Bronson. Bronson North to Cooper. Home. I'm pretty sure that's between 25 and 30km, so it shouldn't take me much more than an hour, if that. (It ended up being exactly 30.51km) It also occurs to me I should start posting these before I do the trip, and maybe number them in my user info, just in case there's an accident, people know where to look for me (not that there's anyone reading this directly, as I look at my friends list) but it's a good place to start just in case there's ever a problem and I'm compeltely MIA. | | Saturday, April 29th, 2006 | | 12:06 pm |
Whew.
Well, Tuesday, as you can see from the distances, was a 72km day. I had a dental appointment in richmond, so I figured, good enough day to stretch my legs a little and see just what kind of shape I'm in. Famous last words. I'd put the dental appointment off from March 3rd, because of the weather. End of winter vs late spring? I know where I want to ride. So, the weather had been great. And then, it stopped being great. Tuesday was a high of +3oC, cloudy, 70% chance of rain, and, get this... 40km/h winds gusting to 65km/h!! So, my 72km ride, work-richmond-home, which should have taken me about two and a half hours, took almost three and a half. I had stretches of road where the wind was so strong across open fields that it was slowing me from my regular 27-30km/h, all the way down to 12km/h, and that was 12km/h standing on the pedals, straining, and cursing god. However, I did manage it. And if I can do it in those conditions, I can definitely do it again in optimum conditions. This is the route I took, one way: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=141637I love the gmap-pedometer. It's great for planning a route, and trip, and getting a ballpark for what the mileage, and therefore the effort and time investment is gonna be. Friday afternoon after work, I followed it up with a 31km ride. Not fast, but also not slow. Much less wind, though. | | 12:00 pm |

The beginning!
Hrm. Well, today, the after-work rides begin. I'm not sure how far I'll make it, but I'm aiming for 30km. Walk in, as usual this morning was 6km, which is a nice start to the day. Outta here at 4pm, with luck, I'll be home by 5:30 or so tonight, with some real kilometers (and sweat) under my belt. What this means is that I have to bring a complete change of clothes to work, shoes and everything, as I'm "projecting a more professional image" here at work. It should be noted that it's working, too. I have to make good miles quick, acutally. I have a dentist appointment on the 25th, and the dentist in in Richmond. And I don't have a car on the road. So, I'm leavin' work at noon for the 2pm appointment, and I'm haulin' butt out there, and then back. Should be... interesting. I should check the old Google Maps tonight and see just how far it is on paper, avoiding the highway. I'm GUESSING 35km one way. If it's more than that, I'm gonna be a hurtin' unit! So, I'm back into biking. Going into the winter, I was an acceptable 195.5lbs, give or take. At this very moment, I'm 203.5lbs, so I put 8lbs back on over the winter. Not good, but also not bad. It could have been much worse. I covered just shy of 3000km last summer, from April 18th through to October 10th (I think, I'll have to check when I got smacked by that car). Needless to say, with what I'm planning this summer, I'm gonna talk about it abit. So, so that people don't have to read it, and I don't have to bother with filters, I'm starting a biking journal, I guess, similar to the weightloss journals that other people are doing, etc. However, my focus is NOT weight loss. I'd be happy staying at 200lbs, if that means more muscle, less fat. My getting in shape is no longer strictly about weight loss (although I do expect to get down to about 180lbs or so). The time/average speed/distances I cover, those are going to be important markers. I might talk a bit about food, too. So, what is it gonna be? That's the question. I need a name for it!Also, bike stories, things that happen on the road, those'll probably crossover between the two journals. Pictures from on the road, also likely to cross over between the three (yes, three. Bike, regular, photo). |
